Eskom Announces New LED Incentive Program for 2025

Eskom has launched an expanded incentive program offering South African households rebates of up to R2,000 for LED lighting upgrades, part of their broader demand-side management strategy to reduce peak electricity consumption.

Program Details

The LED Lighting Incentive Program runs from February 1, 2025, through December 31, 2025, with a total budget of R50 million allocated for residential rebates.

Rebate Structure:

  • Basic LED upgrade: R20 per qualifying LED bulb (max 50 bulbs)
  • Smart LED systems: Additional R500 for automation integration
  • Professional installation: Extra R200 rebate for certified installer work

Qualifying Requirements

To qualify for rebates, LEDs must:

  • Meet SANS 62717 efficiency standards
  • Achieve minimum 80 lumens per watt efficacy
  • Carry 3+ year manufacturer warranty
  • Be purchased from registered South African retailers

Households must demonstrate a minimum 40% reduction in lighting electricity consumption compared to previous installations.

Application Process

Applications open February 1st through the MyEskom Customer Portal:

  1. Upload proof of LED purchase and installation
  2. Submit before/after electricity consumption data
  3. Provide certificate of electrical compliance where required
  4. Await processing (4-6 weeks typical)

Rebate payments will be credited directly to electricity accounts.

Industry Impact

LED manufacturers report 300% increase in inquiries since the program announcement. "This incentive makes LED conversion accessible to middle-income households who were previously deterred by upfront costs," says Sarah Mitchell, CEO of SA Lighting Association.

Local retailers are preparing special promotion packages combining qualifying LED products with installation services to maximize customer rebates.

The program builds on Eskom's successful 2023 pilot program that helped 15,000 households save an average of R380 monthly on electricity bills through LED conversions.
